South West Heritage Trust (SWHT) – Unlocking the Archives

Examples of archives at Somerset Heritage Centre

In conjunction with archivists from the South West Heritage Trust (SWHT), we are looking to catalogue and research a huge amount of archive material relating to the Quantock Hills AONB, much of which has never been previously investigated. In common with most County Records Centres, the SWHT has a backlog of archival material, stored in document boxes, awaiting cataloguing and conservation at the Somerset Heritage Centre on the outskirts of Taunton.

These collections are likely to include estate records and plans, deeds, survey books, inventories, correspondence and maps. Volunteers will be trained in how to handle, research and interpret this material, thereby increasing understanding of the historic heritage of the area.

The project will be based at the Somerset Heritage Centre and supports the project, Unlocking the Archives, led by our Historic Heritage Officer. As it is a desk-based project in a fully accessible building, the role is open to anyone who may be less physically active, or for people with disabilities or mobility issues. We intend for this role to be as accessible as possible, and we hope to remove any barriers to participation. There will also be opportunities for some home-based online working.

If you are interested in this role, or you represent clients or members of the community who you think would be suitable for this role and would benefit from the experience, then please get in touch with our team here
