The Quantock Hills National Landscape Landscape Partnership Scheme requires volunteers to carry out wildlife surveys within the landscape scheme area.

We specifically require people to survey the following species groups: 

• Adders
• Bats
• Birds
• Fungi
• Butterflies
• Trees and other plants

The specific methodology for each survey varies between species group, however the general method is going for a walk along a fixed route and counting the number of animals/insects that you see. You will then record this information on a form, which you will submit to the Quantock Hills National Landscape landscape partnership scheme.  

Prior knowledge of the species is helpful, however it is not essential as full training will be provided in order to enable you to carry out the survey. 

The wildlife surveys will take place outdoors, often in remote places and in difficult terrain. The surveys will be spread out over the whole extent of the Quantock Hills National Landscape landscape partnership scheme area. The catchment area for this area covers Bridgwater, Taunton, Bishop’s Lydeard, Watchet, Nether Stowey.  

Full training and support will be provided to ensure you are able to carry out the surveys effectively and safely. The time commitments vary depending on the species group that you are interested in. As a rough guideline you would be expected to volunteer for at least 2 days per month. There will be a mixture of weekday and weekend volunteering as well as some evening work in specific cases.  

Training will be provided in how to identify wildlife and record it. Dates TBC in April.
